There being no other quarter whence assistance could be gained for the due performance of divine worship in the Cathedral and for parochial duties among the troops and European residents of the Colony, so that at the present time the students are dependent for instruction upon the voluntary services of Mr. Odell, formerly tutor, and now Military Chaplain, and Mr. Oliver Naval Chaplain to H. M. Hospital Ship Minden, assisted by the Chinese tutor before mentioned.
The Bishop states that a European tutor will be procured from England as soon as possible; but that the difficulty of finding suitable persons to fill the offices of tutors is very great, and when found they have to be transported a distance of 10,000 miles to the scene of their labours at great expense to the College, to be perhaps sent back again at an equal outlay on its being discovered that the climate is unsuited to their habits or constitution; that the time when the establishment will be again complete is therefore necessarily uncertain, and the present staff must be held to consist of one European tutor, and not of two as first designed.
The library contains about 2,000 volumes, principally theological works. The Schoolrooms possess a pair of 12-inch globes and are well supplied with books and maps.
